THE KAPPA FESTIVAL

The Kappa Festival is an annual event, held on the last weekend in July. It takes place along Fureaidori,which is the street in front of the fire station near the city hall.

The purpose of this festival is to encourage warm and friendly relations among the citizens of Ushiku, thus enhancing communication.

Every year about 12,000 people join in the Kappa-bayashi dance. As they dance down the street you can hear energetic shouts of "Yappe! Yappe!" There is also a large drum and bugle marching band, made up of elementary and junior high school students, which parades up and down the street in the afternoons.

There is something for everyone at this lively event, so come and enjoy the next Kappa Festival.

THE WAI WAI FESTIVAL

The Wai Wai Festival is an annual event which takes place on Culture Day (or Bunkano-hi), a national holiday occurring on November 3rd. The festival is held at the parking lot of  Ushiku Central Continuing Education Center.

The purpose of this festival is to introduce Ushiku's industry, agriculture, commerce and environment to the public, as well as to bring producers, dealers and consumers together in a friendly atmosphere.

There are many shops and various events taking place at the festival including a lottery, where you can get the chance to win a trip overseas; and a flea market with many second-hand and hand-made goods. Fresh local produce is also sold.

THE CARP FESTIVAL

The Carp Festival is an annual event which takes place on Constitution Memorial Day, a national holiday which occurs on May 3rd. It is held in Kinrin Park which is on the west side of City Hall, and hundreds of carp streamers are raised in hope that the children of Ushiku will grow up to be strong and healthy.

There are several events at this festival, especially for children, including pounding boiled rice into rice cakes, making bamboo dragonflies, and a tug-of-war. Please come and join the next Carp Festival.

THE GOTTA ICHI (FLEA MARKET)

The Ushiku Gotta Ichi is a flea market that takes place 5 times a year, on the second Sunday of every even-numbered month except August at the Sakae-Machi grounds, near the Civic Center.

There is a great variety of things for sale, including second-hand items and fresh vegetables. Everybody works very hard to make this event enjoyable. So, please join us and support your local community !

If you are interested in setting up a booth of your own, or require more information please come to the Agricultural, Commerce and Industry Section at City Hall.
