The emblem of Ushiku City was created on July 1st, 1960. It
was chosen from 1,000 contributions sent in from all over Japan. The
emblem is made up of 2 parts, the first being the Chinese character for
cow, and pronounced "Ushi." It is in the form of a mythical
Chinese bird. The second part is circular in shape and symbolizes
cooperation and harmony. It is based on the katakana character
"Ku". |

The flower of Ushiku City is the chrysanthemum, which is one
of the most beautiful flowers in traditional Japanese art. This flower has
many species and comes in various colours such as white, yellow and
purple. Chrysanthemums are found in many people's gardens and are
sometimes eaten with popular Japanese dishes. It was chosen as the flower
of Ushiku City at the suggestion of its citizens because chrysanthemums
are very suitable to the city's climate. Ushiku holds chrysanthemum shows
every fall and each flower competes to be the most beautiful. |

The representative tree of Ushiku City is the Golden Sweet
Olive. It belongs to the olive family and is an evergreen shrub.
Unfortunately, it doesn't bear fruit in Japan. Its flower is bright yellow
and has an intoxicating aroma. It is said that this tree is very sensitive
to exhaust fumes, so we can estimate the amount of air pollution from its
condition. The city has distributed many Golden Sweet Olive trees to its
citizens. |

The bird of Ushiku City is the bush warbler, a very
cherished bird in Japan. It was chosen with the hope that it would thrive
forever in Ushiku. To protect the bush warbler, the city promises to do
its best to keep the environment clean and full of trees and flowers. |
